Disasters don’t come with a warning, and when they strike, property owners are often left feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about what to do next. In my years of helping people navigate insurance claims, I’ve seen how taking the right first steps can mean the difference between a smooth recovery and months (or years) of frustration.
If you or someone you know has experienced fire, flood, or water damage, here’s what I always recommend. They may seem basic, but in an emergency you often forget basic things, so keep this checklist in your files:
Step 1: Ensure Safety First
- If the damage is severe, evacuate and don’t re-enter until authorities say it’s safe.
- Shut off utilities if necessary (water, gas, electricity).
Step 2: Document Everything
- Take clear photos and videos before any cleanup begins.
- Capture all damage, including walls, floors, furniture, and personal belongings.
Step 3: Prevent Further Damage
- If it’s safe, use tarps, boards, or sandbags to protect your property.
- Place damaged items in a safe spot for inspection rather than discarding them immediately.
Step 4: Contact the Right Professionals
- Call a Public Adjuster first – Your insurance company has adjusters working for them; you deserve someone advocating for you.
- Notify your insurance company – But be mindful of recorded statements.
- Work with a trusted restoration company – Ensure they’re focused on full restoration, not just quick fixes.
Why Involve a Public Adjuster?
Insurance companies handle thousands of claims every day. Their priority? Paying as little as possible. A Public Adjuster works exclusively for you to ensure you get the settlement you’re entitled to—not just what the insurance company wants to offer.
